THE WEEK IN FASHION: NOVEMBER 12th-16th

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

It's fashion news Friday once more, let's delve into the big stories you need to know about this week...

Last night saw London's most glamourous descend upon 50 St James for the launch of Kate: The Kate Moss Book. The party was hosted by the inimitable Marc Jacobs while Nick Grimshaw and Queens of Noize provided the musical accompaniment. Ms Moss was looking the ultimate version of her legendary self; all mussed up long hair, gorgeous pout and super glamourous Jacobs gold dress. Most fabulous fact of the evening? The cocktail created in Kate's honour Kate 76; a Veuve Clicquot and CIROC Vodka concoction. Earlier in the day, the superdupermodel signed copies of the book at the Bookmarc store in Mayfair.

So we've been through the elation of Raf Simons' Dior appointment, the patient waiting to see what he do and the falling in love with his new Dior direction- anyone else dreaming of an iridescent ballgown skirt? Now US Vogue have a major profile on the Belgian boy and it's very much worth a read. The central gist of the piece is that Simons is an incredibly down-to-earth, sweet man who is thus able to handle the immense pressure of going into Dior given the colourful recent history of the house. He tells Mark Holgate, "What I find amazing is that it’s a beautiful house where I can make clothes to make women happy. I was raised in a very happy nest by very happy people, and I like to think that those are enough ingredients to make me succeed at Dior."

Excellent news... we will all be able to buy the Chanel hula hoop bag! Well, you will if you start saving your pennies now, £1,500 to be precise.

At the CFDA awards this week, Greg Chait was awarded the big prize of $300,000 to grow his knitwear brand The Elder Statesman. Meanwhile, Tabitha Simmons, US Vogue contributor  and new footwear favourite, and jeweller Jennifer Meyer scooped the runners-up awards $100,000 each. It was a somewhat surprising choice of winner which meant that slightly better-known young labels such as Wes Gordon missed out on funding, though perhaps the panel felt that if you're already dressing Michelle Obama then you are doing rather well anyway.

If you happen to be planning a trip to China at the beginning of next year then be sure to make time to visit Chanel's new exhibition which will be housed at the Zaha Hadid designed Guangzhou Opera House. The event will celebrate Chanel's links with the arts, including the costumes she designed for  ballet 'Le Train Bleu'. Picasso's scenery which he created for the production will be the exhibit's centrepiece. China seems to be getting all the luck when it comes to the "Culture Chanel" series, please can we get some Chanel culture in London?

Back to London, and a pair of designers we are VERY lucky to have in our midst. Quirky hat designers Bernstock Spiers are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Brick Lane based-label with an exhibition of their iconic styles, including the signature bunny caps which sum up Thelma and Paul's fun and irreverent attitude perfectly. The show is on at Fred [London] gallery until 24th November and includes the opportunity to get your hands on an exclusive version of the bunny cap as well as 80s Bernstock Spiers films, hat installations galore and images of London's finest in their Bernstock Spiers.

PUT IT IN YOUR DIARY... Grace Coddington will be signing copies of her new memoir at Browns next Thursday from 12.30 to 2.30. Let's go! If you're not already incredibly excited about this, then read the excerpt published recently in US Vogue. It's amazing.

Yet another fun thing to do for Christmas shopping/ Christmas shopping avoidance would be to visit Bella Freud's new pop-up shop at Bicester Village which will be open until the beginning of January. Get yourself a gorgeous Freud knit and one of her new range of scented candles. Find out more about Bella's fabulously interesting life and fashion philosophy in this interview she gave The Telegraph.

This is so great from The Guardian, all about how Bridget Jones would dress now. In celebration of the news that Bridget Fielding is working on a third Bridget tome but also a rather apt reminder of the fashion times.

There are two lovely films to round off this week. First up is the first instalment in a series of 3 detailing the behind the scenes story of the forthcoming Valentino: Master of Couture exhibition at Somerset House.

And yet more Chanel, the story of No.5 and Marilyn Monroe. Divine.

THE WEEK IN FASHION: US ELECTION SPECIAL

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

I'm back from NYC, full of election obsession. Every TV channel and bill board stateside is plastered with promises, agendas and jibes but the race is so monumental that news stories have spilt beyond the political. In fact, the Obama/ Romney run-off has so many facets that I have managed to compile almost an entire news post with fashion-related election news. Of course, other stuff did happen this week so there's a round-up of the best of the rest at the end.

FIRST LADY FASH-OFF

Image from nymag.com
Michelle Obama has done a lot for "first lady fashion" with her championing of younger, non- establishment designers and often daring choices. That means, of course, that us fashion pundits have a keen eye on how Ann Romney- until recently her style could be summed up as "country club Mom"- deals with the situation. The wives have been most prominent at the TV debates, the last of which took place on Monday night. It looks like Ann has gone down a copy cat route. Mrs Obama wore a neat-waisted, full skirted knee length Thom Browne dress which she's been seen in previously, at the Democrat conference. Meanwhile, Ann Romney chose an identical silhouette which featured a cute, girlish floral print skirt which contrasted which MObama's dark flocked detail. The Cut have helpfully awarded points to the respective outfits chosen by the contender's wives.

Notably, Ann Romney's dress came from Oscar de la Renta who has a track record for dressing the political elite- Hilary Clinton is a big fan. De la Renta's political ties are in fact so strong that a retrospective of his work is set to go on show at William J Clinton library in Arkansas. There are plans for the exhibition to travel to the George W Bush library in Texas and the Reagan Library in California.  It's a sign that the designer, who hails from the Dominican Republic, has built huge cross party trust and respect.

Many observers have noted that while Thom Browne was excited to tell Twitter that the First Lady was wearing their dress, Oscar de la Renta's camp (@OscarPRgirl) remained tight lipped about Ann Romney's choice.

Honored to see First Lady Michelle Obama wearing our Spring 2013 dress at the final presidential debate

Why? Rumour has it that Anna Wintour is yielding her considerable influence to ensure that Mrs Romney doesn't get any support from designers. Wintour is one of Obama's biggest fundraisers and supporters. American press have noted that while they receive plenty of information and cooperation from designers chosen by Michelle Obama, no brand has yet come forward to admit to dressing Romney. Furthermore, Diane Von Furstensberg went so far as to disclose that they did not know where the Republican candidate's wife had got hold of one of their dresses (the shop, maybe?).

What could next week bring in the first-lady fashion race? Will Michelle find a sartorial response to Ann's floral bathing suit?

KATY PERRY'S BALLOT DRESS

Can you guess who Katy Perry plans to vote for? She wore her choice on a rubber dress when she performed at an Obama rally in Vegas. I'd love to see Anna Wintour or SJP- both big Obama fans- show their support in this number.

ELECTION BARBIE

One of my big NY finds was in mahoosive toy store F.A.O Schwartz. The perfect way to commemorate the 2012 Presidential race is , of course, Election Barbie. Get yours here.

YOU DON'T OWN ME

Fashion favourites including Alexa Chung and Tavi Gevinson star in an anti-Romney version of Lesley Gore's 1964 classic "You Don't Own Me" aimed at condemning the Republican's views on women's issues. It's pretty awesome.

THE BEST OF THE REST...

You knew Chanel was coming to Scotland for its upcoming metier d'arts show on December 4th but a little birdie tells us that the exact location will be Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary I, Queen of Scots. A very British, fabulously wintry alternative to Versailles, where the Resort collection was showcased. Speaking of Chanel, Business of Fashion's interview with Bruno Pavlovsky, the company's CEO is well worth a read for its insight into the mechanics of one of the world's recognisable brands.

Grunge was a key trend at the SS13 shows, with Phillip Lim and Dries Van Noten both showing 90s influenced collection. So it's perhaps the perfect moment- if there ever was one- for Courtney Love to launch her fashion range. She posted several pictures of the pieces from a photo shoot on her twitter (@courtney) earlier this week. It's called "Never The Bride" and Love told Huffinton Post that "In the hem of all the dresses there’s a ruby and it says c***...This is the stuff that I would wear if I was young enough to not look like Bette Davis in 'Whatever Happened After Baby Jane?'." The clothes will land "soon" at Net-a-Porter.

Following her somewhat controversial exit from T magazine in August, Sally Singer is heading back to American Vogue on Monday as Digital Creative Director. Despite praise from Jill Abramson, editor at NY Times of which T is a part, rumours abounded that that Singer had failed to pull in sufficient ad revenue. Whatever the truth, it looks like Singer has ladned herself a plum new role.

THIS WEEKEND, why not drop into London College of Fashion's pop up shop in Kingly Court, off Carnaby Street. Open until 1st November.

It's getting chilly outside, but never fear Michael van der Ham for Brora cashmere is here. The collection arrives at Brora.co.uk on October 30th, cards at the ready!

You thought handbags were safe as houses? Think again. Mulberry issued a profit warning this week, with forecasters expecting that profits would be £31m (£5m down on last year) rather than the £41m initially expected. Reduced orders from department stores and a decision to reduce the number of smaller stockists were reasons given for the disappointing news.

If you enjoyed The September Issue then you will love the news that American Vogue has made a new documentary to mark the magazine's 120th anniversary. The programme will be called The Editor's Eye and will look at how a big shoot comes together. There's a book of the same name being released this month. Grace Coddington will be among the stars of the show, which airs on December 6th. There's a great excerpt from her memoirs in this month's US Vogue, as well as a rather touching tribute from Anna Wintour in her editor's letter.

Finally, rumour has it that Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane will dress The Rolling Stones for their upcoming 50th anniversary tour. It makes perfect sense given Slimane is most famous for his super-skinny rock star aesthetic, doesn't get more Rolling Stones than that, does it?

THE WEEK IN FASHION: 7th-11th MAY

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

It's apparently only been a four-day week but there have been plenty of happenings in the world of fashion for us to bring you up to speed on.

Vidal Sassoon styling Mia Farrow's hair (image from www.hellomagazine.com)
We begin on a sad but celebratory note with news that legendary hairdresser, Vidal Sassoon passed away this week at the age of 84. From a fashion perspective, Sassoon's impact was incredible. He is widely credited as creating hairstyles which freed women from the weekly shampoo and set. Not only were these liberating from a practical point of view, but the five point bob was the defining style which went with the mini skirts of the swinging sixties. What many may not know is that Sassoon spent much of his childhood in an orphanage. He also spent time in his teenage years as a militant Zionist, fighting fascists in London and then joining the Israeli army. His career in hairdressing affected women the world over, whether they had their hair cut into one of his styles, which still look modern today, or used his range of product. As many have already said, a life well lived.

A little more from Monday night's Met Gala now. Carey Mulligan is auctioning the amazing Prada fish scale sequin dress she wore to co-host the event on e-bay. All proceeds will go to Oxfam America. At  the time of writing, the bidding had reached $1,025 but it is widely expect to rise steeply by the time the auction closes on Saturday 19th May.

We showed you the gowns on Tuesday. But here are a few other pics from the Met Gala and related events which we've come across this week.

If ever there were a tweet to flutter a thousand hearts (and more besides) then it came from Chanel this week: "Chanel has selected the world renowned actor Brad Pitt to be the face of the upcoming advertising campaign for Chanel No.5". Pitt is apparently heading to London to shoot this week. In Team FEAL's professional opinion, there's no better man to be the first male to promote Mme. Chanel's favourite perfume.

NEWGEN designer Thomas Tait has been nominated for the 2012 Andam prize, the prestigious fashion award judged by some of the most discerning names in business. They include Delphine Arnault, deputy managing director of Christian Dior; Pierre BergĂ©; Sarah Andelman, purchasing manager and creative director of Colette; Humberto Leon, Kenzo designer and co-owner of Opening Ceremony. Tait is nominated alongside other exciting young designers Cedric Charlier, Julien David, Vika Gazinskaya, Calla Haynes and Nicolas Andreas Taralis. Tait told Vogue,  'If I were to win, I would show at Paris Fashion Week, which has been an unspoken dream of mine for quite some time now'. He went on to admit that he's 'a bit starsrtuck already' by the judges who will be deciding the winner. Previous Brits to win the award, which is worth £185,000, include Gareth Pugh and Giles Deacon. Good Luck Thomas!

Aquascutum has been offered a lifeline this week after a deal was reached  with YGM, the company's Asian licensee. It means that over 100 jobs have been secured and will see the survival of the UK stores, concessions as well as the head office set-up. There are still ongoing negotiations to sell the factory in Corby with hopes for a purchase to be made in the coming fortnight.

Vogue's Fashion Features Director Harriet Quick is leaving to join new invitation only travel club, Luxup.  She will become Editorial Director while Averyl Oates, formerly at Buying Director at Harvey Nichols, will be Commercial Director. In addition, Sarah Mower will be the site's London curator. Quick said "After so many great years at Vogue, I am thrilled to be joining Luxup...The global traveller is a growing force in luxury retail - just witness the environs of Bond and Mount Street. On a simple level, I'm frequently stopped for directions and advice from be-puzzled Chinese visitors. On a personal level - luxury, shopping, travel? That's a wonderful world." Quick's appointment is perhaps another sign of the trend for editorial stars moving from magazines to retail and online businesses.

Dress lust of the week, aside from the Met gowns obvs, goes to Eva Mendes in her Jonathan Saunders AW12 overblown peony print dress. Adore it with the turquoise sunnies.

We told you earlier in the week that Tod's owner Diego Della Valle will be reviving the Schiaparelli brand, which he has owned for several years. There have been bubbling rumours that John Galliano, out of a job since his departure from Dior last year, might come on board as Creative Director. This is what Cathy Horyn gleaned of the status quo in her conversation with Della Valle this week.

"Asked if he might consider John Galliano, Mr. Della Valle pulled a good poker face. There have been rumors, he said: “One week it’s Galliano, the next it’s someone else.” He expects to hire someone by September. Finding someone with the skill for Schiaparelli is hard enough, but many designers are used to perks and big budgets, and these don’t seem things they will find in a brand trying to create a new experience"

Anna Wintour appeared on the Colbert Show this week. Among the topics they spoke about as President Obama's announcement in support of Gay Marriage, which came this week (yay!). Wintour said "I am thrilled. There were tears in the office atVogue today in the support of gay marriage. We're thrilled about the president". Wintour also discussed how Prada was so much more than what the Devil wears and how tempted she was to don trackie bottoms and eat chips. I'm very sad to report that I cannot find a working video of the interview yet.

Shoe King Christian Louboutin is expanding his business with plans to enter the beauty market it was revealed today. He is joining up with Batallure Beauty LLC. Their co-chairman is Robin Burns, a longtime fan of the iconic red-soled shoes. The admiration is mutual; Louboutin chose the company because he felt Burns understood him best. THe line, Christian Louboutin Beaute, will launch late next year. And the muse? Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.

Finally, Dolce and Gabbana's "Italiana: An Italian Style Comedy" feels like a rather fun way to start the weekend...
