ALEXA CHUNG SHOWS US THE NEW CROP TOP

Posted by Bethan Holt, Junior Fashion Editor at Large

Once upon a time we thought crop tops were silly things. Who on earth would you want to show off your belly in public unless you were Rihanna or Miley Cyrus? Then Miu Miu happened. Last September, Mrs Prada showed crop tops in a new light as chic pieces to wear with pencil skirts. Coupled with a huge revival in 90s fashion, crop tops became normal, nay, fabulously cool. This has also been the Summer of the cami top which is slightly less challenging than the crop top but still hardly straightforward when it comes to controlling one's cleavage beneath it. All in all, tops have undergone quite a transformation. The humble vest just doesn't quite cut it any more.

So what will next summer bring for our torsos? If Alexa Chung's choice of outfit at the launch of her debut book last night is anything to go by then it will be all about the off-shoulder. On the majorly plus side, shoulders tend to be pretty good parts of our bodies- when did you last hear someone complain about their fat shoulders? On the downside, any kind of bra with straps would likely be a terrible idea. Clearly we really need a miraculous leap forward in the world of strapless bras before next Spring.

Once Alexa wears something, it's almost guaranteed to become a big trend. But it's not just Alexa. There were lots of off shoulder tops and dresses in the Resort collections, including Christopher Kane which Chloe Moretz then wore to the Teen Choice Awards. Rebecca Hall also gave Celine a rare turn on the red carpet a few weeks ago wearing the AW14 obi wrap top. Thankfully, the new off shoulder top is more fitted and sleek than those regrettable boho super- flouncy gypsy tops of the early noughties. Hurray.

THE WEEK IN FASHION: SEPTEMBER 5-12th

Posted by Kasia Hastings and Bethan Holt

So we've just about recovered from four weeks of shows...

REMEMBERING VIDAL SASSOON
Friends and family paid tribute today to one of hairstyling's legendary figures. Vidal Sassoon was described as a "generous and compassionate man" during the service at St Paul's Cathedral this morning. The service was made up of both Jewish and Christian tradition (Sassoon a lifelong anti-Semetic campaigner) and attended by friends such as Zandra Rhodes, Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons, amongst many others who remembered him for his contribution to fashion, culture and human rights.
Rex Features
CHANEL LBJ EXHIBITION
Last night Chanel opened their Little Black Jacket exhibition in London at the Saatchi Gallery following the success of their book, "The Little Black Jacket" this summer and the subsequent exhibition in New York. Naturally, Karl Lagerfeld invited London beauties such as Alice Dellal, Eva Herzigova, Yasmin le Bon and Amanda Harlech to mark the occasion. The exhibition itself consists of more than 100 black and white photos of Karl's favourite muses (some more surprising...Kanye) all sporting the iconic jacket. Sounds like a perfect Sunday afternoon treat to me - The exhibition is on until October 28th and admission is free.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR CARINE
Is there no stopping Carine Roitfeld? Just when we all thought she had settled nicely into her CR Fashion Book project she goes and announces yet another string to her bow. And it's a fascinating one at that as Roitfeld is assuming the newly created role of Global Creative Director for Harper's Bazaar, published by Hearst and major rival to her former employers, Vogue owners Conde-Nast. Fans of Roitfeld's work should rejoice as the move will make her work way more accessible; her stories, which look set to include covers, will appear in Harpers editions around the world. She will be working closely with her friend Stephen Gan, Harper's Bazaar creative Director. Hearst's President and Chief Executive, Duncan Edwards said in a statement, “This collaboration marks the first time anything like this has been done, and we’re very excited about what Carine will bring to Bazaar editions around the world.”. Bring on the March editions which will be the first to feature Carine's shoots.

THE DUCHESS OF NEWCASTLE
Today it has come to light that the Duchess of Cambridge dressed up as Cheryl Cole and performed her hit "Fight For This Love" on her hen night. In her forthcoming autobiography Cheryl Cole reveals that it was Prince William who personally informed her of Kate's tribute back in June at the Jubilee Concert in which she performed. The Duchess is said to have donned Cheryl's famous split trousers and have been step perfect, now that we'd like to see, so much in fact that we have recreated the look for ourselves...

ALEXA CHUNG'S BOOK IS NOT A STYLE BIBLE
Alex Chung has insisted that her new book is not to be taken as a style bible! The style icon and Vogue contributor told Fashionista.com, "It's basically a compendium of drawings and photographs, and I'm going to write about a bunch of stuff,"- phew, no Victoria Beckham dictatorial then. Alexa's book is expected to be published next September by Penguin Books.

TREND: ENGAGEMENTS:
The bigger the better - Blake Lively and Jennifer Aniston have been flashing their atomic sized rocks this week in the latest round of celeb ring-offs. Blake Lively made her first public appearance since marrying Ryan Reynolds at the Chanel Bijoux De Diamant 80th Anniversary celebration earlier this week.  The Chanel campaign star's ring is reported to have cost $2m, the rose coloured diamond is the stuff of child fantasy and was paired with a similarly sugary Chanel AW12 dress. Meanwhile Brit girl Poppy Delevigne received an extraordinary proposal from her beau James Cook, whom she has been dating since 2007. Poppy's proposal came in the form of a bespoke jewellery box with an inscribed message by British designer, Anya Hinmarch. We hope Poppy knows it's James she's marrying and not Anya.
Delevigne tweeted "Err YES...#happiestdayofmylife" along with a photo of the jewellery box.

THE SAINT LAURENT DEBATE CONTINUES
The Saint Laurent debate continued this week as Cameron Silver spoke out against Hedi Slimane's debut collect for the Paris fashion house. The L.A. "antique" store owner spoke to British Vogue about the "vintage education" he gave Raf Simmos before the designer embarked on his spring collection,  and of Slimane told them, "If you're going to present yourself as the messiah then you better deliver the 11th commandment". Ouch. Silver's branded Slimane's collection as, "too referential" and confirmed it as the wardrobe of every L.A. girl of the past 5 years. It seems there is still appreciation for Slimane's collection in the form of Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO and chairman of PPR who own Yves Saint Laurent. He spoke to WWD, publicly backing the collection. Finally, Susie Lau of Style Bubble wrote a great piece this week in the light of the Saint Laurent collection about what really constitutes "modern"- is what the average, non- super fashion girl wants to wear now? Or is it what is deemed experimental and entirely new by critics?

BRITISHISM IN AMERICA
"Crickey, Britishism are everywhere" wrote Alex Williams in the "Style" section of the New York Times this week. It seems the Downton effect is spreading beyond the Autumn/Winter catwalks and into the vernacular of the average American, or New Yorker anyway.  Brit colloquialism such as "cheers", "brilliant" and "loo" have been adopted by Americans... Whilst Williams suggests it might be Anglocreep and even annoying we're sure a bit of good old British charm won't hurt and with the likes of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow way ahead of this trend perhaps it's here to stay. Jolly hockey sticks!

BABY FORD
Congratulations to Tom Ford and his long-term partner Richard Buckley who announced the birth of baby, Alexander John Buckley Ford, last Friday. The pair who have been together for 25 years, kept the pregnancy completely hush hush, Ford previously told Time Out, "if I have children, no one will know about it until the child is born. And no one will ever see the child because I certainly wouldn't use it as a press tool'. Looks like we'll be waiting a long time to see little Alexander John in a Ford suit.

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA FOR H&M
H&M released the first images of their latest designer-high street collaboration this week shot by artist and director Sam Taylor-Johnson. The first glimpses of the eagerly anticipated collection from Maison Martin Margiela suggest we can expect chic separates, statement coats and beautiful silhouettes- just the thing for a winter pick me up. The collection is available online and in store from November 15th.

HUGO BOSS AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE
This week the first of Hugo Boss and the National Theatre's creative collaboration took to the stage in the opening night of Frank McGuinness' production of Tirso de Molina's Damned Despair. This is the first time the National has joined forces with a designer and with Hugo Boss set to create all the costumes for their forthcoming contemporary productions we are expecting some extra style with our next slice of culture. It's also an interesting development in the wider context of fashion gaining cultural capital and the stage as a commercial space.

Finally, check out the art work for RiRi's new album... Taking graffiti to the next lev

BODY IMAGE: SHOULD CELEBRITIES BE AMBASSADORS FOR THEIR BODY SHAPE?

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

Last week, Christina Hendricks was in Australia to promote her new range of glasses for Specsavers. As anyone with a new product to flog might, she took interviews from key press. During one such appointment, she was asked:

"You have been an inspiration as a full-figured woman. What is the most inspiring story that you can remember where you've inspired someone?"

Christina stopped the interview, asked for the question to be rephrased and when the same question was asked again she said, off air, "I think calling me full-figured is just rude".

Some context here; Christina plays secretary Joan in Mad Men and has been described "oozing sensuality" and having "curves in all the right places". Basically, she is not your standard super slim actress but nor is she exactly "full figured" in the great scheme of things, given that we live in a world of ever rising obesity levels and a UK average dress size of 16. What's more, the question implies that by appearing in popular TV shows and films, Hendricks is automatically an inspiring role model for women who have breasts and a bum.
Hendricks in Mad Men
There was a comparable story in this weekend's Times magazine in which Caitlin Moran interviews the writer, director and star of Girls- the forthcoming new sitcom about the realistic, non-airbrushed lives of twenty something New York girls-  Lena Dunham. One of Dunham's most remarkable traits is apparently that she has a soft covering of fat making her not at all big or obese but just the way quite a lot of girls look when they don't worry too much about what they eat or how much exercise they do. Moran includes a remarkable, or not so, story about one of Dunham's first forays into film...

"The first time Dunham appeared naked on camera it was in a film she made at university, in which she climbed into the campus fountain in a bikini and pretended to shower and clean her teeth, before being moved on by a security guard. When she put it on YouTube, it went viral, and got 50,000 hits. However, it also sparked a debate, in the comments underneath, about the size of Dunham’s thighs, and whether she was fat or not. What she had seen as just a jokey film had turned into a debate about her shagability, and she eventually deleted it"

Lena Dunham at the Emmy awards
This reminds me of an episode a while back in which Alexa Chung posted a picture of herself with her Mum on Instagram. it was intended purely as  a sweet Mother/ Daughter pic but became a voracious debate about whether or not Alexa was too thin. The photo didn't ASK anyone to comment, just as Dunham's video begged no opinion of its star's body however the comments came flooding in free and fast, whether Dunham and Chung liked it or not and with apparently no holds barred on the searing honesty of the observations.

This isn't a problem with the press, or with any one group of people in particular. It just seems so wrong that there is a collective feeling of entitlement to put female celebrities in a box- whether that's full figured, a bit of puppy fat or  way too skinny- and to expect that they might want to be defined for being that way. If you think about the best or worst thing about yourself, maybe your lovely pert boobs or your long skinny legs, your pinchable bum or your lumpy thighs, no matter how awful or great it is in your opinion, would you want it to be the one and only thing people really obsessed over about you? I think that would get pretty tiring.

STYLING IT UP: WHITE SHIRTS

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

Peter Lindberh's supermodels in white shirts (image from thefashionbloggers.blogspot.com)
Pretty much every "grown-up" lady I know has a perfect white shirt. It's a staple element of the wardrobe of most modern women. Until now, the white shirt has either been buttoned up with a suit for business meetings or worn loose and mannish as in Peter Lindbergh's supermodels portrait above. However of late, it's started to inch into actual fashion territory too.  By that I mean that it's been used as key styling tool on the catwalks and, most importantly, is Alexa Chung's new favourite thing to wear to big events.

Alexa in Christopher Kane at the Scottish Fashion Awards
In our day-to-day work, the FashEd and I are constantly hearing about how consumers are trying to save their pennies and are reluctant to invest in whole new looks. This makes the white shirt's new lease of life even more exciting for those of you out there who want to look of the moment with out breaking the bank. Step forward our new formula-

1. Take a blingy party dress from your wardrobe.
2. Wear with white shirt.

Ta da! Ok, so it's pretty simple but the basic principle is that you can revive old skirts and dresses just by wearing them a new and now way, namely by priming them up with a crisp shirt rather than baring flesh or using a cardigan  to cover up. Take it a step further by adding gems to the cuff or a ribbon round the collar. It is imperative that the shirt is taken far, far away from corporate connotations to achieve the right level of nowness- Kristen Stewart wore a Stella white shirt get-up recently which would have been rather fab had it not been for the overly staid jacket that got plonked on top.

It wasn't actually Alexa who started this trend- though she's it earliest real life adopter. On the AW12 catwalks, there were white shirts sprinkled into many of the major shows. Giles' show notes even thanked Gap for the provision of white shirts throughout. Roksanda Ilincic kept the shirt within its menswear roots but added fur and sporty cuffs. Simone Rocha put huge knitted panels on hers while Stella's were embroidered in cobalt blue rococo patterns.

Here are our favourite white shirt picks, just keep it well away from a suit jacket, unless you work in a law firm...

THE SECRET OF CARVEN'S SUCCESS AND THE ALEXA CHUNG FACTOR

Posted by Melanie Rickey, Fashion Editor at Large
Fashion dynamite: Alexa and Carven's Guillaume Henry (image from http://blog.shoppleasedonttell.com/)
Ask any journalist and they will tell you about the stories that got away. I'm not talking about the missed scoop (there are those too); I refer to the stories that get commissioned and written, and then for whatever reason - be it bad timing, more urgent news coming up, advertiser commitments or a combination of all three - they get repeatedly put on hold until they become out of date.  In others words: spiked.

Any passionate journalist with a bee in their bonnet about a story likes to get that story written, out the door and in print asap. Time is of the essence, so I have been getting increasingly teeth-grindy about a very timely piece I wrote for Grazia in February about the resurgence of the Parisian label Carven, with personal insights on the label's rightness-for-now by its self-confessed Number One Fan, a certain Miss Alexa Chung.

Mr Carven a.k.a Guillaume Henry (image from vogue.fr)
To my mind Carven's designer Guillaume Henry is a significant talent, and his work for the house is so on-the-button for fashion now because it is playfully cute as well as elegant and modern. The way he throws his looks together is pure fashion magic; and we can lay the trend for bejewelled collars, pinafore dresses and flatforms squarely at the door of his Parisian atelier.  It's little wonder he has been the bestselling label of the season across retailers including Net-a-Porter, my-wardrobe.com and Matches.

The story has been with the magazine for three months and has been scheduled numerous times, only for a more of-the-week story to usurp it at the last minute.  I'm sanguine about it all of course, because I have my beloved blog through which to share it with you.

Alexa in Carven SS12 (image from http://blog.shoppleasedonttell.com/)
Following is the story exactly as written for Grazia; you'll see the way I write on here, and the way I write for Grazia are markedly different. House style shifts dramatically from publication to publication, and Grazia's tone is very specifically upbeat, informative and fun. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did to write it.  Interspersed through the copy are Carven's best-sellers of this season. And FYI, retailers love carven right now. Harrods' Head of Womenswear, Helen David told me

'Since the arrival of Carven at Harrods earlier this year, the brand has been phenomenally popular with our customers. Several pieces from the SS12 collection sold out within hours of being received, so we have reordered almost every style a few times over.  Carven has been so successful in-store and online as the collections are versatile, intricately crafted yet without the designer price tag, thus appealing to a very wide audience.’

WHY EVERYONE LOVES CARVEN
By Melanie Rickey

You’ve got to know a label is seriously happening when two of the world’s most influential fashion women are not only wearing it, but telling everyone how much they love it. Step forward Carven, and its designer Guillaume Henry; or as he tells us Brit girls, “just call me Guy.”

When Net-a-Porter founder and its chief fashionista Natalie Massenet first clapped eyes on the brand three years ago, it had zero stockists and the business consisted of three people in a dusty room in Paris looking for a break into fashion. This fact did not deter her from buying the collection immediately, and pronouncing that 32-year-old Henry had “the talent of a young Yves Saint Laurent.”

Cropped tweed jacket £550
For Alexa Chung, arguably the chicest 20-something on the planet, her Eureka moment came, typically, on a fashion shoot. “I was on a shoot for L'officiel magazine and the stylist had brought some detachable collars for me to use,” she told me. “The story was a 60s theme and not all the dresses were right so I ended up using the collars on everything. It was super weird because that item was exactly what I wanted at the time. I was thinking of making them myself before I saw his more perfect version, now Carven is my dream label.”

Now you’re probably thinking, “why have I never heard of Carven?” The reason is, of course, its relative newness to the 21st Century marketplace. In its present form it is three years old, still a baby, and only known by fashion insiders. A fact that is about to change this spring, as it hits its 500th stockist with a hit Spring collection chock full of pieces from zig-zag fit-and-flare dresses, cute poufy skirts, and neat little jackets creating waiting lists all over the world.
Mountain shorts £550 at Matches

Fashion buffs will know, however, that Carven has history. The diminutive 5 foot 1” tall Madame Carven inaugurated her Haute Couture house in Paris in 1945, and her elegant fashion was designed expressly with the petite chic of Paris in mind.

Over the years the label ground to a halt, until all that remained was the house perfume, Ma Griffe. When Guillaume Henry was hired to the job in 2009, he had literally nothing to take inspiration from expect the little trademark Peter Pan collars and cuffs Madame Carven and now Alexa Chung and her fashion fans love to wear.

So what is going right with Carven? Guillaume Henry is what. This young designer who trained at both high fashion house Givenchy and everyday fashion label Paule Ka has truly got the knack of understanding how to walk the line between creating clothes that look like fashion, yet you can wear them all the time for any occasion.

As worn above by Alexa... Lace dress £590 at Net-a-Porter
Just ask Alexa, who says she wears Carven “24/7”. In fact I’ve never heard her speak more passionately about a fashion label. “Carven really is my dream label. I love how they layer things, how they make ugly cropped sweaters in strange prints, how everything is new but classic. I adore their shoes, I live in their coats and I'm always very very excited to see what he does next.”

The feeling is mutual of course. “I LOVE her. She’s fantastic and super inspiring. I saw her the first time and you see her body and then you hear her husky voice. I love contrasts. I love that is chic and tough, and doesn’t do that whole “sexy girl” thing.“

“The thing with Monsieur Henry,” continues Alexa, “is he knows what modern women want. His clothes are practical but beautifully crafted and quirky enough that you feel amazing wearing them and as though you look interesting.”
Cute jacquard dress £575 at Harrods
Another thing: they are not outrageously expensive. Carven fits into the “contemporary” fashion category between high street and high fashion.

So what is Guillaume Henry’s secret? I ask him what he thinks it is. “Well, for me Carven is about freshness, spontaneity, smiling elegance. You know, some designers create and imagine a woman, a customer, and that’s great – but it’s not for me. I design for my mother, my friends; someone going to work, with children, going out at night – women I know.”

“I am always asking myself: who is the girl? Where is she living, how is she working? What’s her face? What kind of life does she have? At the end of the day, I want my products to have their own life. I love it when I hear about different people wearing the same pieces. Recently, with the same dress, we dressed Rihanna and Isabelle Huppert. They’re so different. Once I had a call from a friend and she was at the supermarket and she was wearing a cropped jacket and she told me there was a lady near her who was about 60 and she was wearing the same jacket. It’s fantastic!”
Pink contrast skirt £304 at Matches

I can’t help but agree. If you look at the Carven pieces available on net-a-porter and my-wardrobe.com, you can see exactly what Guillaume Henry is trying to do. It is cute pieces – a flecky knit with a peter pan collar, a sweet peplum T-shirt, a shrunken yellow blazer - that have the touch of high fashion and a touch of the everyday; and they’re just a bit geeky too which means they can go in the direction the wearer takes them.
We can’t help agree just a little bit she Alexa says of our new best friend Guy Henry, “I hate him....because he's perfect.” We dare you not to fall in love with his clothes.

COACHELLA FASHION: THE FOUR EASY RULES OF FESTIVAL FASHION, PLUS TUPAC RISES FROM THE DEAD

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

Hanna Gaby Odiele and Kasia Struss rocking out at Coachella (image from Harper's Bazaar)
It's a pleasingly predictable occurrence at this time of year: the hype surrounding Coachella as the first music festival of the year. There is always buzz about the line-up, the attendees and What 'Everyone' (aka fashion bunnies) Will Wear. But what is quite comforting about the photos which pour out of Coachella - which is near Palm Spring in California - and therefore has quite warm weather - is that what people wear never really changes that much. The general uniform is frayed denim shorts, some form of boots (Dr Martens/ wellington/ worker) a cool top (boho fringing or graphic print), and some sweet friendship necklace/wristband type thing, not forgetting the obligatory slouchy bag. This is a good thing.  When in daily life there are many ways to look cool, so many options that it can often be overwhelming, Coachella, and festivals in general, are places where it is easy to look pretty fab in four easy steps. Not including getting off your face and lost in music, obvs.

THE FOUR RULES
1. Denim shorts
2. Cute little top
3. Work boots
4. Slouchy bag

Here are a few of our favourite takes on the denim shorts look...

Kate Bosworth in animal tee and little Mulberry bag. I'm a big fan of the
lime fish earrings too (image from  harpersbazaar.com)

Coachella not scout camp- boyish badges and camouflage, and hey is that Josephine de la Baume? (image from harpersbazaar.com)
Ok, they're coloured denim but these laced up shorts are along the same lines. Really love the scarf flapping in the wind and wintry hat (from www.mrnewton.net)

Zanna Roberts Rossi lets her bleached and ripped denims take centre stage. This is a bit chavvy for us at FEAL.  (image from harpersbazaar.com)

The Zombie that is Sky Ferreira does double denim, and looks more grungy than cutesy festival.  (image from www.fashionologie.com)

When the festival fashion formula is so easy - read: safe - it takes a lot of sass to veer off course. These girls did and we love them for it. Hanne and Karla (top and below) are my best dressed for the sole reason that they actually look like they're at a festival. They're a bit thrown together but there's not a a denim cut off in sight plus they actually look like they're having a brilliant time.
It's Hanne and Karla again... LOVE Hanne's fringing, face paint and pewter patterned trousers (image from  www.harpersbazaar.com)
Best Dressed Who Are Clearly VIPs at an Exclusive Party Rather than Moshing in with Everyone Else...

PLUS, you MUST WATCH the hologram performance from Tupac and Snoop Dog. It's moving and beautiful and quite unbelievable that a performer could be so present nearly 16 years after his death....
